Amplification, as such, is part of a deeper understanding for sound research. Michaël Sellam and Alexis Chazard are working together at a thorough insight of that particular matter by creating situations where they use specific recordings and real-time sound modifications.

Each part of the project  explore a different setup, like playing with a folk group, investing a resonating church, amplifying an art opening or relocating sounds of a boat from outside to its inside travellers.

Mission

[en] Installation & performance, Mission was an investigation about the notion of silence in a church of a small village, Vasselin. It was set up in the context of “Vivre les sons 2008” organised by Le Centre du Son.

[fr] Alexis Chazard et Michaël Sellam travaillent conjointement sur
plusieurs projets impliquant le recours au son. A Vasselin, c’est le
silence qui formera leur matière première pour le réinvestir en
déployant de nombreux traitements et variations sonores en temps réel.
On sait que le silence est une illusion, même si l’oreille ne l’entend
pas, il persiste toujours une fréquence qui, bien que discrète,
contient en puissance des contrastes violents. En amplifiant
considérablement le silence, de l’intérieur à l’extérieur de l’église,
en en changeant les caractéristiques, les vibrations inhérentes, ils
créent un espace sonore qui occupe l’espace. Des capteurs sonores,
microphones et micros-piézos placés dans le lieu envoient des
informations qui, amplifiées et transformés par un logiciel de
traitement simultané du son, produisent différentes formes sonores.
Entre les moments performatifs, le public est invité à découvrir et à
s’approprier le dispositif sonore mis en place, in situ.

Clash !

On august 24, 2008, took place Clash ! a public experiment during the first edition of the “Festival Indisciplinaire” on the Groix Island in South Britanny. We asked for a local group to take part in an experiment where the players were hooked with various microphones. We tried to individuate different tracks therefore respecting the classical idea of a long-play record.
